Cruise Ship Coronavirus - Right-sizing Our Concern (MAR 07)
Thank you to our family and friends who have had us in their thoughts.
With the news about several cruise ships dealing with Coronavirus, we certainly have a heightened awareness of our situation. We are either riding in an incubator for Coronavirus (and other diseases) or we are in a (semi-)isolation chamber dramatically reducing our likelihood of coming in contact with a carrier. The odds heavily favor the latter.
Reasons:
- This ship has been doing Ft. Lauderdale – San Diego – Ft. Lauderdale for the past two months.
- Passengers and crew were screened coming aboard. We have been aboard for nearly two weeks.
- None of the places we have visited had any reported cases of Coronavirus.
- We have been in a hot climate where the abundance of sunshine we have enjoyed also significantly shortens the lifespan of most viruses exposed to direct sunlight.
- Today, at our first port of call in Mexico, the ship underwent a health inspection by government authorities before it was allowed to dock; a comforting external, official evaluation of the health status of everyone aboard.
We will probably be at greater risk during our two days in San Diego and on the flight home. Once we get home, our tri-town area is reportedly a bit on edge because of some faculty and students who recently returned from northern Italy and went back to school before a re-think occurred and they went into home quarantine.
Pam & I are taking our usual cruise ship precautions. For years, Rhinovirus has been the curse of the cruise industry. We have been on several ships that had an outbreak of it, thankfully never catching it. We have developed ways to help ourselves and each other be cautious.
We will continue to aggressively protect our health both aboard and ashore. We will continue to maintain situational awareness and act accordingly. As of now, we have the expectation and intention of continuing to enjoy our trip.
Again, thank you all for your concern and keeping us in your thoughts. We wish you and yours good health.
Happy you are enjoying the trip. I don't doubt you can have fun and stay vigilant at the same time. All the best to you two!
