For us, this is a relatively short winter trip - 20 days door-to-door.  ROTTERDAM will be making port calls in familiar places, Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica and Corinto, Honduras being the only one we have not previously visited.  This cruise nevertheless nicely satisfies our primary objective.  It gives us a break from a New England winter while meeting four criteria for this year - not being sedentary, not living out of a suitcase, not being anything ambitious and not being too far from home. We just want a relaxing trip that does not begin halfway around the world or challenge us to do expected touristy things.

As mentioned in yesterday's post, having lost time passing through the Tehuantepecer the previous night, the captain kept the ship's speed significantly above her normal 20-knot maximum cruising speed all night long.  23 knots may not strike the reader as that much faster, but on a ship this size it is a big difference. It takes a lot more fuel making it expensive (which makes the bean-counters back at headquarters unhappy). It increases stresses within the ship. It causes vibration can break things (e.g. pipe joints).  The captain was no doubt regularly asking the ship's navigator how soon he could return to normal cruising speed and still meet our scheduled arrival time.  Finally, that moment arrived.  At 0617, the vibration and ship noise suddenly dropped back to normal. Hello San Diego (MAR 11)

We awoke to find ROTTERDAM already berthed. We had a leisurely breakfast in our stateroom while (with some apprehension) awaiting the announcement that passengers could begin disembarkation. Apprehension built as the clock went well past the initial disembarkation time with no announcement of any kind. It subsided a bit when the PA system began announcing the names of several non-USA citizens who had not yet reported to ICE for passport inspection. Ten minutes later most of the names were paged a second time.  The clock continued to advance with no further announcements, causing apprehension to uptick again. At 0845, I went out on our verandah to look at the gangway and was relieved to see passengers disembarking.  The first official announcement that passengers could go ashore came at 0900. Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (MAR 03)

Having skipped ahead with several post on our health status and progress towards home, I am now returning to a chronological series of posts on the remainder of our trip, hopefully at the rate of one per day.  Many are already written, but long tours on March 3-5 were a stumbling block for time to created those posts.  If I can hold the daily schedule for now just March 4-5, it should be clear sailing to the finish line.   In my last breathtakingly exciting post we were at sea having passed through the Panama Canal the previous day and so... ____________________________________________ Hello Costa Rica We were up early for a 9-hour tour that began at 0700.
